Your computer can be used as a creative tool in your quest to learn a foreign language. Some innovative ideas can turn your language education into an entertaining, truly memorable experience.
Audio Modification
Many companies produce software packages that enable you to transform your voice (or someone else’s). You can make your voice feminine, masculine, or robotic. It can be raised to a high pitch or lowered to bass tones.
So how does this help you learn a new language?
Many foreign languages (French and German, for example) assign gender to nouns. When learning new vocabulary, why not record feminine nouns in a female voice, masculine nouns in a male voice, and neuter nouns in a robotic voice? This approach can also be used with other types of vocabulary learning. Perhaps you could record a list of German dative verbs in a woman’s voice and a list of German accusative verbs in a male voice. You can even take audio files that have been recorded by other people and make them more interesting by morphing voices or adding sound effects.
An internet search for ‘voice cloaking’ or ‘voice modification software’ will provide numerous resources to choose from.
Don’t Just Print
If you own a color printer you can spice up your vocabulary lists with bursts of color – perhaps feminine nouns in red, masculine nouns in blue, and neuter in dark grey. You might want to highlight irregular verbs in another color – or perhaps apply bold or italics to make them stand out on the page. Experiment with various fonts and weights.
Websites and Online Sources
Every language student should have at least one online dictionary bookmarked (preferably several). Each dictionary will work a little differently. Some provide audio clips. Others will allow users to submit new words and expressions. (Be aware that not all user submissions will be 100% accurate.) The best dictionaries will clearly indicate ‘verified’ user submissions and will mark colloquial and dialect expressions appropriately.
Are you a poet? Help is as close as your computer. Online language resources include helpful rhyming dictionaries. An internet search for ‘rhyming dictionary French’, ‘rhyming dictionary German’, ‘rhyming dictionary Spanish’ etc. will give you good results.
Try to rely on accredited educational sites (domains ending in .edu) when doing grammar research. For instance, if you are looking for Hungarian verb conjugations, try a search like ‘Hungarian verb conjugations site:.edu’. Although at the time of writing the previous search doesn’t work at MSN, it does work at Google, Yahoo!, Ask.com, and many others. The ‘site:edu’ portion of the search restricts results to domains ending in ‘.edu’ – which are usually universities and other similar educational institutions.
Online Chatting and Video Conferencing
Video-cams, VOIP, microphones . . . put them all together and talk with foreign friends from all over the world. Using a language in conversation is probably the quickest way to learn.
Whatever you do, remember that the more senses you stimulate during the learning process, the more firmly imprinted the learning becomes. Turn your language education into a fun-filled sensory experience and you will probably stick with it. If it becomes monotonous, you may lose interest.

30 minutes? wow!
I've been building computers for years, and have my own company supplying computers.
There are some incredibly simple things you can do to make the process a lot easier, stress free and smoother.
1. Have a good work area, dont build it in you living room/bedroom on the carper. If you haven't got a seperate work room then try building it on your kitchen table.
2. After every step tidy up, i.e. Once you have installed the motherboard get rid off all the used boxes and any rubbish there may be.
3. Keep all the currently unused/uninstalled components away from everything else.
4. Get some little containers for all the screws you will be using, lose screws around the place can be a right pain!
5. Get a proper PC building tool kit, you can get one for like £5 in the UK if you are in America have a look around on newegg for one. Very useful
6. If you start to feel a bit stressed by it all then stop and come back to it later, if you are getting aggitated or stressed by it, it will just lead to mistakes.
7. If you are new then read all instructions/manuals dont think you can just blagg it.
8. Get some cable ties, for all the lose cables in you case.
9. Remember this is meant to be fun, not a choir.

Follow these steps to do computer maintenance.
- run Disk Cleanup – from the System Tools section of Accessories
- Open My Computer, then Right Click on your C drive and pick PROPERTIES. Pick the Tools section and click on CHECK NOW. Check both tests, and YES, let it run after you restart. You see, CHECK DISK will ensure that your hard drive is working completely. This test might take an hour or so.
- run DEFRAG – from the System Tools section of Accessories.
Keep your anti-virus solution up to date, and run a full scan weekly.
Keep your anti-spyware solution up to date, and run a full scan every few days. I recommend the free SpyBot Search & Destroy that you can get from http://www.download.com
Do all of this regularly, and your computer will run better.

I rebuilt my partner's acer aspire after it blew up. She was always complaining it ran too slow. She had everything but the kitchen sink on it. I bought her a new computer and re-built hers, but this time made sure it was lean and mean – no programs I hardly ever used. Still had XP, Dragon naturally speaking, Office 2007, so it had lots of heavy duty programs, just not any unnecessary ones.. It is now lightning fast. My best recommendation is therefore, although a bit drastic, to back up to an external drive all the files and programs you think you may want and then do a clean install. Good article here:

That one does everything the paid for ones do, and the registry cleaner is less aggressive than some of the better known ones.
Also don't forget some anti-virus programs are notorious for slowing the computer down. NTL Net-guard/Virgin PC-guard being one example.
Get a flash drive and put some stuff on it.
Also, you can clean up fragmented files (on a PC) by doing a Defrag:
To do this, go to My Computer, Right click on "Local Disk(C:)" and choose "Properties." Under the "Tools" tab, find where it says "Disk Defragmentation" and select "Defragment Now."
This shouldn't do any harm to your computer or files, but might clear up a little extra space for you!
